Power
Unlimited, Inc. provided their first custom UPS
system to major oil company's shipping department
in 1991. The system consisted of a small UPS designed
to work on a 120 volt three phase delta system while
being mounted in a special rack that would secure
the UPS while the supertanker was under way. During
system maintenance the rack would slide out for
access to all sides. The system came with a remote
monitoring system connected to a display on the
bridge of the vessels. It supported their gyro's,
radio systems, and part of their instrumentation.
This was the first success in "re-packaging
a UPS" for a specific requirement.
Since then we have provided
UPS systems in cabinets for harsh environments including
the offshore drilling industry. Our "power
system integration" concept in the commercial
realm has carried over to the high technology drill
rigs being used in the deep water environment. As
you can see from the photos below, all the system's
component are packaged in one drip-proof enclosure.
This provides several benefits.
• Ease
of installation
• Full
access for maintenance
• Smaller
footprint frees up valuable floor space
• Batteries
can be internal or installed in separate compartment
• Better
quality control during build-out in shop environment
• Fabrication
performed in Houston, Texas, closer to company
offices for test and evaluation
• Coast
Guard, ABS, DNV, and/or independent testing can
be performed with minimal travel
